Pots and pans, utensils, camp stoves, we’ve had them all but a dedicated camp knife set? This was the first. Maybe it took a company like Gerber coming out with one to catch my eye. Or the fact that there weren’t any real quality alternatives.

I’ve always been a fan of Gerber and the quality of their knives, so I knew this was probably a well-made set that would be a good investment for family camping trips where I planned an awesome camp dinner!

Either way it certainly makes a ton of sense to have one as a part of your camping gear and the all-in-one set fits nicely in my gear bins.

Everything you need for light food prep on site.

An integrated ceramic knife sharpener, cutting board and additional storage in the slide out tray (which we pack other cooking accessories in) make this set an all in one prep station to chop vegetables, trim chicken or fish, and slice fruit.

This Video From Gerber Gives You a Better Look…

Ever Heard of a Sheeps-foot Point? Me Neither.

The profile of the blade has a very culinary look. Its thick and sits well below the grip for chopping, mincing and other food prep. The only thing it lacks, in my opinion and in the research we conducted for the review aggregator, is a serrated edge. It would help in cutting meat, chicken and even baked potatoes (with the skin on of course). The handle is very solid, the index finger groove and textured green thumb rest on top of the knife make it very ‘no slip’. All in all it’s a great knife and could be used for just about any campsite cutting and carving.

The paring knife should not be overlooked. Think about how often you use the paring knives in your kitchen at home for just about everything. It’s the same when your out camping, it’s a must have tool. The Gerber Freescape version is a workhorse with a thicker than average blade and no slip grip. It makes quick work of fruit, veggies, fish and marshmallow bags.

Final Thoughts…

There is a lot of value in this set. For only ~$30 (it used to be $59), which is the latest price on Amazon, you get not one, but two quality Gerber knives (which if purchased separately cost a lot more than $30 bucks), a case, a cutting board and a sharpener. That’s not bad at all and we really were focused solely on the main knife as a kitchen accessory. Once you start using it you’ll be carving campfire sticks and who knows what else. With a built in sharpener you will always have a good edge.

We rank it a good buy and so do 95% of the reviewers online.

This complete set surprisingly only weighs 2 lbs, so it’s still possible to take with you in a pack if you’re hiking a short distance to your campsite – assuming you have room to do so, of course. But for longer hikes and when you prefer to be a bit more rugged with your food prep, my go-to knife for all situations if my favorite, the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Knife.
